The Shire Trophy 2008

2nd July 2008

38 Schools and 104 students descended on the Shire London the new Seve Ballesteros course to play in the Shire Trophy.

The largest and most prestigious one day event for Independent Schools in the UK. Over 50 schools applied to play in the annual event now in its second year.

The weather was fine even thought the forecast was for heavy rain and thunder, nervous organisers were checking the weather on an hourly basis.

The competition was a 2 tee start with the lower handicaps taking on the scary first hole. The 154 yard hole has an island green, players were using anything from an 8 iron to a 7 wood.

The 7th hole had the nearest the pin trophy this year won by

James Pretty from Loughborough

Longest drive was held on the 15th hole over water onto a sloping fairway. Stuart Clement from Halliford took the under 19 trophy whilst Stuart Holder also from Halliford took the under 15 Trophy.

As the weather was fairly calm for The Shire we expected some low scores.

Some of the younger players struggled with the rough which has grown substantially since the opening of the course last year
