The morning started off with Campbell College from Northern Ireland  teeing off onto the first, an island hole just after the mist had risen. They had played the course the day before and with their low handicaps and current form were one of the favourites to win the Schools Cup. The boys were joined by their Bursar Mr John Monteith. The format for the competition is 3 pupils and 1 teacher / school staff member play together with the best 3 scores overall counting towards the team score.

Fifteen schools from all over the UK took part in the inaugural Schools Cup set to be a yearly competition in October. Sadly Claires Court School could not attend due to the untimely death of their deputy head Mr David Course, our thoughts are with his family and friends.

Bedford School comprised of their new master in charge of Golf Mr Simon James and the Shire trophy Individual winner and junior course record holder George Wilson. A very strong team  with handicaps between 2 and 8.

Early on in the day news came across the course that someone had had a hole in one. Conor O'Connor from St Columbas used his 5 iron on the 4th hole an intimidating 183 yards with a large lake in front of the green. His ball flew straight into the hole resulting in some repair work to the hole! Congratulations Conor what a memory for your first competition at the Shire.

Whilst out on the course speaking to the school teams they were all enjoying the good weather and battling with the swashbuckling Seve Ballesteros's first course in the UK.

The picturesque 7th another island hole saw a few balls in the water. Millfield Girls along with teacher Mrs Speed all carded a 3 on the hole as did Millfield Boys who on paper were the favourites to win the competition. In the end Millfield Boys and Campbell college NI lost out to Bedford by one shot. Millfield did go away with some silver with Grace Hill winning the best Girl category and the Boys team winning the Rules Cup. The Rules competition is set to be a regular feature of the Schools Cup where the team can go through the test whilst having their lunch after the game.

Aldenham team with replacement teacher Andy Gall were also a force to be reckoned with. Their lowest handicap Matthew Wallace playing off 1 took the best Individual Trophy and a new Junior Course record of 1 under par.

Thank you to all the teams that took part this year some who travelled a long distance to play. The next one day competition will be The Shire trophy in June. To register your interest please click here. Players have already registered for over half of available places.
